Suicide and Suicidal thoughts

Suicide is not a diagnosis or disorder; it is a behaviour. The Judeo-Christian belief has been that life is a gift from God and that talking it is strictly forbidden. (Carroll-Ghosh, Victor, and Bourgeois 2007). A recent, and more secular, the view has influenced how some individual view suicide in our society.

It's the second leading cause of death among 15-29 years old globally. Close to 8,00,000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. So, what are the warning signs of suicide?
(Firstly, warning signs aren't always obvious and they may vary from person to person. Some people make their intentions clear, while others keep suicidal thoughts and feelings secret).
Some warning signs are; talking about suicide such as " I wish I were dead", looking for a means to kill oneself, talking about being a burden to others, withdrawing or feeling isolated, having mood swings, feeling trapped or hopeless about a situation, increasing substance abuse, saying goodbye to people as if they won't be seen again.
Now, the most important question; Why people commit suicide?
People have their own different reasons to commit suicide. (Approximately 95 per cent of all persons who commit or attempt suicide has a diagnosed mental disorder.)
Most people may think that people commit suicide cause they don't want to live or they want to die but that's not true it's because they lost their hope in life, it's because they think they don't have any other solution to their problems except killing oneself. "You may experience a sort of tunnel vision where in the middle of a crisis you believe suicide is the only way out". So, one of the main cause is Hopelessness; others are Desperation and Guilt, History of Aggression and Violence, Shame and Humiliation, Development Stressors.

Some facts on suicide and suicidal thoughts:
  • Most suicidal people are very ambivalent about their feeling regarding living or dying. Most are "gambling with death" and see it as a cry for someone to save them.
  •  People who want to kill themselves are only suicidal for a limited time. If they are saved from the feeling of self-destruction, they can go on to lead normal lives.
  • A large percentage of people who commit suicide have been diagnosed with a mental disorder. However, many others are merely unable at that point in time to see an alternative solution to what they consider an unbearable problem.
Now, how can you prevent suicide and suicidal thoughts?
You are the only main key to prevent yourself from attempting suicide or having suicidal thoughts. You may experience many problems in your life but there's not only you, almost everyone has problems in their life. Nobody has a perfect life and suicide is not the solution to the problems. You may constantly think about your problems; that you became unable to see alternative solutions to these problems except suicide. Most people feel shame to share their mental illness and seek help with therapist especially in developing countries but sharing your problems or ventilating them is the best solution. If you cannot talk about your problems then try writing your problems. Establish your support network and always remember suicidal feeling are temporary.

                                   Thank you!
                                   Hope it helps you.😊
